Summer break is coming to an end, and it’s time to start preparing for the new school year. With the right amount of preparation, your kids will hit the ground running on the first day of school. Follow these back-to-school preparation tips to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Set Up a Workspace for Homework

Even young kids spend a lot of time doing homework throughout the school year. Many kids plop down to do their homework anywhere, but that makes it hard to concentrate. Set your kids up for success by creating a dedicated space for homework. Choose a quiet spot in their bedrooms or another area of the house. Then load it with the supplies they’ll need to get to work.

Start a Sleep Routine

Staying up late and sleeping in is a normal part of summer for kids. However, if they remain on a poor sleep schedule for the rest of the summer, you’ll have a hard time getting them up for school. Start a sleep routine now, so your kids go to sleep and get up at the same time each morning. Doing this will make it easier to ease into the school year. Plus, it’ll ensure they get ample rest when school starts.

Prepare Your Child for Traveling to and From School

If your kids ride the bus to school, show them where the bus stop is and explain what to expect during the ride. Go over the rules of riding the bus so they’ll know how to behave during trips to and from school.

Are your kids going to walk or ride bikes to school? If this is going to be their first time attending that school, walk or ride with them a few times so they’ll learn the route. This will also give you a chance to review the route to make sure it’s safe for your kids.

Alleviate Back-to-school Stress

Are your kids a little stressed about starting school this year? This is common, especially when kids are starting at a new school. You can alleviate some of the stress by familiarizing them with the school. Visit the school with your kids so they can see it in person. If it’s open for visitors, walk through the halls and show them the classrooms.

You can also help them get excited by talking about all the fun they will have in school. Remind them about the friends they will see and make and the exciting activities they can enjoy. This will help them reframe the experience so they will start to look forward to starting school.

Following these tips will make transitioning to a new school year a breeze. Being prepared will make it easier for you and your kids.
